What Is Voicing? Why the Same Chord Sounds Different When a Pro Plays It

In Part 6 we changed a single bass note and the chord suddenly started to sing. But sit down at a piano and something is still undecided: how many notes to play, which octave each one goes in, and how far apart to spread them. The page just says Cmaj7 and leaves the rest to you.

All of those remaining choices together are called voicing. It is very nearly the whole difference between an amateur and a professional playing the same chord. Here are four ways to think about it.

Why does one Cmaj7 sound muddy and another sound clear?

Stack notes tightly in a low register and the sound clumps. You played the right chord, but it comes back as a rumbling lump. Why?

Low notes produce a lot of overtones — the extra notes that ring along above whatever you play. Down low there are so many of them that if you put another note nearby, their overtones collide and your ear can no longer tell the two apart. Which gives us a rule of thumb:

Wide at the bottom, close at the top.

That is simply what the overtones themselves do — they are sparse down low and get denser as they climb. Copy their shape. Use generous gaps like fifths and octaves in the low register, and tight ones like seconds and thirds up high. A half-step interval only reads clearly once it is up around middle C, while a fifth holds together far below that.

The left hand takes the root, the right hand takes the colour

You have two hands, so it is natural to split the job. The left hand plays one low root and declares "this chord is D"; the right hand carries the chord's expression.

And here something useful happens. The left hand has already stated the root, so the right hand does not need to play it again. Drop the root and put something else in that space, and the sound opens up considerably. This is called a rootless voicing, and jazz pianists comp this way constantly.

So what should the right hand keep? The two most important notes are the 3rd and the 7th. The 3rd decides bright or dark (Part 3) and the 7th decides the nuance above it (Part 5). Those two alone already reveal the chord's identity, which is why they are called the guide tones. The 5th, quite often, can go either way.

The distance between the hands matters too. Too close and you get the mud from the last section, so an octave to a tenth is the usual gap.

Your hands barely move when the chord changes

You got a taste of this with inversions in Part 6. If that was about the posture of one chord, joining voicings together is the choreography of the whole progression. Its name is voice leading.

The idea is simple. Any note the two chords share stays exactly where it is, and everything else moves to the nearest available spot. Going from Dm7 to G7, both chords contain F and C — so leave those fingers alone and let the others slide by a half step.

The payoff is double. Your hands stop jumping around the keyboard, which is easier to play, and the sound stops arriving in disconnected lumps — it flows. You are already in the next chord before you noticed the change.

If adding a tension made things worse, not better

In Part 9 you learned to add colour with 9, 11 and 13 — and maybe you tried it and got something messy instead of something beautiful. Usually the tension is not the problem. Where you put it is.

The classic accident is a tension sitting a half step directly below a chord tone. Put the 9th of a Dm9 (E) just under its ♭3rd (F) and the two collide head-on. The fix is simple: lift that tension a ninth up. Same note, one octave higher — instead of clashing, it now glints on top.

A well-organised Dm9 looks like this: low D (D3) in the left hand, F–A–C–E (F4 A4 C5 E5) in the right. The 9th has moved to the very top. Identical notes, different places, no collision.
