What is SynthLab?

Learn synthesis on a synth that actually makes sound

SynthLab teaches how synthesizers work — not with static diagrams, but on a real playable instrument. Follow the whole subtractive signal path with your own hands: an oscillator generates a waveform, a filter carves it, and an envelope shapes it over time. Every sound is synthesized live in your browser with the Web Audio API, so there is nothing to install and no account to make.

The Learn curriculum walks through waveforms, filters, envelopes, LFOs, modulation and FX chapter by chapter, pairing every concept with an interactive demo you can touch immediately. Read it, turn it, hear it — the fundamentals stick surprisingly fast when all three happen together.

How to get the most out of it

If you are new, start with Learn to build the concepts, move to Free Play to design sounds without guardrails, then test yourself in the Quiz by recreating target sounds. The Glossary covers any term that trips you up, and the Guides go deeper on the core ideas.

Pulling apart presets from the Sound Gallery is great practice too. The "make that sound" guides rebuild iconic patches — supersaw leads, Reese bass, acid lines, FM bells — step by step, and Patch Recipes translate your settings into parameters for hardware and software synths like Serum and Vital.

In the Studio you can sequence patterns and turn your own patches into short loops. Everything you make can be saved to your Library and shared as a link.
